永州龙兴寺息壤记

【原文】
永州龙兴寺东北陬有堂,堂之地隆然负砖甓而起者,广四步,高一尺五寸.始之为堂也,夷之而又高,凡持锸者尽死.永州居楚越间,其人鬼且禨.由是寺之人皆神之,人莫敢夷.
《史记·天官书》及汉志有地长之占,而亡其说.甘茂盟息壤,盖其地有是类也.昔之异书,有记洪水滔天,鲧窃帝之息壤以湮洪水,帝乃令祝融杀鲧于羽郊,其言不经见.今是土也,夷之者不幸而死,岂帝之所爱耶?南方多疫,劳者先死,则彼持锸者,其死于劳且疫也,土乌能神?予恐学者之至于斯,征是言而唯异书之信,故记于堂上.
【译文】
永州龙兴寺东北一角有个正厅,客厅里有一块顶着砖而隆起来的地方,宽四步,高一尺五寸.开始以为是厅堂（高低不平）,弄平了它却又高隆了起来,凡是拿铁锹铲平它的人都死掉了.位居永州楚越之间（的地方）,那里的人迷信鬼神.因此寺庙里的人都把它看成神异的现象,没有人敢铲平这块鼓起的土.
《史记·天官书》及《汉·志》有占卜土地隆起的事,但却没有具体（指铲平鼓起的土就会死）的说词.甘茂在息壤定盟,大概那个地方也有这类的事.过去的记载怪异现象的书,有记载洪水滔天,鮌偷了玉帝的息壤来堵塞洪水,玉帝于是命令祝融在羽郊杀了鮌,这种说法不是经常看到的.现在这种土,铲平他的人就会不幸而死亡,这难道是玉帝喜欢做的事吗?南方多瘟疫,劳动的人先死亡,于是那些拿铁锹掘地的人,他们是死于劳役和瘟疫,土哪里能有什么神性呢?我恐怕求学的人到了这里,采纳了这种说法,只相信志怪书籍的言论,所以（把文章）记在堂上.
