A finite element model is proposed to simulate the precision and ultraprecision grinding of steel and to describe the temperature fields developed during the process.The grinding is modelled using the commercial implicit finite element code MARC.In order to obtain the input data required for the model and to examine the heat damage induced to the workpiece,a series of experiments was performed with the same grinding conditions,but using different aluminium oxide grinding wheels of different bonding on the same work material.Comparison between numerical results obtained from the proposed model and experimental predictions,as well as numerical and analytical calculations reported in the literature,revealed a good agreement between theory and practice,indicating therefore that the model may be suitable .for industrial applications.

1 .Introduction
The energy per unit volume of material being removed from the workpiece during grinding is very large.This energy is almost entirely converted into heat,causing a significant rise in the workpiece's temperature and,therefore,potential thermal damage.In order to elaborate this topic,extensive work has been performed pertaining to the modelling and simulation of grinding and,especially,to thermal modelling; models that can predict the temperature rise within the workpiece have been developed [1].Most of these thermal models are based on the early work by Jaeger,where the grinding wheel is represented by a heat source,equally distributed over the contact length between the workpiece and the grinding wheel,moving along the surface of the workpiece with a speed equal to the speed of the workpiece [2].A 2D model was used,with the grinding width large with respect to its length.However,this model is based on the assumption that the total grinding energy is entirely absorbed by the workpiece,whilst in reality the total grinding energy is distributed not only in the workpiece but also in the grinding wheel,the chip,and the coolant.A prediction of these energy components and the effect of cooling,along with the various assumptions made,related to the thermal properties of the workpiece material and the exact heat source profile have been made in order to improve the original model [3-6].The finite element method has been employed for modelling the grinding process,in order to achieve a greater accuracy and more reliable results [6,7].
