ngland is often identified as the heart of the UK—it accounts for more than 4/5 of the total population. London, England’s capital city, is the largest city in Europe, a major global financial center and one of the most popular travel destinations in the world.
England is divided into nine regions: London, the South East, the South West, the West Midlands, the North West, the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, the East Midlands and the East of England. Below is a brief introduction to each of these areas.
1. London : Filled with famous sights and attractions like the Big Ben, the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square, London is today a center of international finance, world-class education and global politics. At its peak in the 19th century, London was as great as Rome in the age of Caesar. Tourists can catch a glimpse of the United Kingdom’s glorious imperial history in the Imperial War Museum and the National Gallery.
2. South East : With distinctive castles and a coastline on the English Channel, he South East of England is a leading region in tourism outside of London. Among the many popular destinations here are charming Cotswolds, renowned Canterbury, Oxford and its colleges and universities and the Thames River.
3. South West: This region has a one coast on the Channel and one on the Bristol Channel. It includes such popular destinations as the proud county of Cornwall, Devon and its Jurassic Coast, Somerset, with places such as Glastonbury, Wells, Cheddar and the County Town of Taunton, Dorset - Thomas Hardy country. The Roman Baths, and American Museum in Bath, inspiringly in Bath and North East Somerset. The spa town of Cheltenham is in the County of Gloucestershire, also home to parts of the Cotswolds.
4. West Midlands : Home to Birmingham, England's second city, Birthplace of Cadbury's chocolate and Ozzy Osborne. Home to Coventry, England’s ninth largest city, the home of Lady Godiva (after whom the famous line of chocolate is named) and once the center of British automobile manufacturing.
5. North West: Considered the beating heart of England, both geographically and culturally. Best known for it's two world class cities, Liverpool and Manchester. The influence of the North West on science and technology, politics, sport and media is undeniable. The Industrial Revolution started here. Home of many world renowned band - The Beatles, Oasis, New Order, Joy Division to name but a few. In sport both Manchester United and Liverpool FC are based in the North West. Also of note in the North West is Cumbria and its Lake District, known as one of the most scenic areas of the U.K.
6. North East : The most popular destination here is the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which boasts a well-preserved Norman castle built under King Henry II in the 12th century and is the namesake of Newcastle Brown Ale, served in pubs around the world.
7. Yorkshire and the Humber : Among the most traveled-to cities here are Leeds, York and Sheffield. Don’t miss York Minster, the National Railway Museum or the Leeds United F.C. Stadium.
8. East Midlands : The East Midlands has a coastline on the North Sea and include the towns of Nottingham, Derby and Leicester. Pay a visit to Nottingham Castle, Calke Abbey and Bosworth Battlefield, all attractions located in this region of England.
9. East of England : Home to the Counties of Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. Among the many attractions are the world-renowned University of Cambridge, well-preserved and visually impressive Norwich Cathedral and the daunting and beautiful Audley End House and Gardens, and Lavenham.
