Chinese wish a permanent friendship. To most of them, real friendships can withstand ups and downs in life. Unlike in the States, close friendships are easily altered or vanished when major life events were occuring such as moving, graduating from school, and changes in social-economic status. Moreover, Chinese friends share a lot in common such as their course choices, occuopations, or hometown. Compare to many westerners in the States, they do have friends with colleagues, but they have more strict boundaries between their work lives and social lives.
On the other hand, Westerners are very self-sufficient. Their friend networks provide mainly emotional supports. In contrast, Chinese offer more material/instrumental help to their friends. For example: A Chinese could find a job, or make an appointment with a renowned doctor through their social network.
