土家人重情谊，过年之前，定要按长幼或远近给先祖们上坟，说是给先祖备“钱”买年货，而且祭祖时要按已故长辈的辈分高低来确定先后顺序上坟。上坟时要用标准的三叩首。上坟还只是第一道礼节，待到春节那一天，要在团年饭前摆上一桌“亡席”，还在桌下烧纸钱，说是让先祖们先享用，烧纸钱是给他们的拜年钱。
土家人住山区，山上天寒地冻的，所以在守夜时便有了围坐火堆的习俗。但凡是农家人，家里都有一间专烧柴的房子，多用于熏肉和取暖。我们常在祖母家守夜。每逢年关，祖母总是要准备许多木柴，特别是要找出一根大柴来充当守夜时的“火主”。
每当守岁之夜来临，夜幕袭来，祖母便会将一堆上好的引火物点燃，那淡黄色的火苗如金子般美丽，偏又是那么的热，让整个屋子里充满了热气。欢声笑语也随之解冻，随着火苗的不断跳跃，一些较细的木柴已经开始燃烧起来，而较粗的也渐渐冒出了青烟。有的木柴未干，则一头冒出了青烟，另一头开始渗出水珠，有一股淡淡的清香味。由于祖母在一旁不断地吹火，一会儿，“火主”便燃了起来，火焰染上了一丝红色，映在祖母脸上，喜气洋洋的，映在我们脸上，也平添了一丝欢乐。农家讲究不生二次火，尤其是点燃后的岁火，更是马虎不得，徜若这“火主”不能一回点燃，那整个春节便没有了喜庆的气氛。“火主”还得燃一夜，徜若中途断了火，那便象征这一家会断了香火，一年都没什么喜庆味儿了。
十二点的钟声敲响，千家万户几乎同时打开大门，先迎一阵财神等吉神之后，再将鞭炮点燃，一时间，黑夜变白昼，万千鞭炮如同惊雷般振天撼地，数不尽的烟花在天空诞生，毁灭虽只有一瞬间，却如万千朵仙花，异草般美丽，在天空中争奇斗艳。
炮竹响起不过瞬间，结束也不过瞬间，但那新春的祝福，却送进了人们的心里。
“爆竹声中一岁除，春风送暖入屠苏。”家乡的春节有着家乡的味道，正如那爆竹声后的春意，久久的回荡在我的心里。
